What's true? What's not? Your guess is as good as ours. That's why they're called rumors. You gotta love that Dirty Water...
An event for the "Iditarod Eights" has just been added this weekend. Requirements require all participants wear parkas and galoshes.
The Women's Great Eight is comprised of 7 starboards and 1 port.
A giant hound dog has been spotted on Cambridge Boat Club's peaked rooftop.
Local Parent/Child Double smackdowns will include Cataldo/Cataldo vs. Hamlin/Hamlin. Word on the riverbanks is if young Cataldo wins, he will be looking for a new summertime job.
A life insurance policy was sent to the Regatta office, as proof of eligibility to row.
Comcast SportsNet will be airing the "Head Of The Charles" highlight show on Sunday, October 25th at 9 PM (EST). It will be airing in Boston, Philly, Chicago, Dallas and San Fran. Susan Francia will be nowhere in sight.
Rumor has it the 2003 Harvard boat is being replicated with local rowers for the upcoming movie 'The Social Network' (based on the book, 'The Accidental Billionaires'). They will be making a ceremonial row on Sunday, as a PR stunt to drum up buzz for the movie, which is set to release in 2010. These "celebrities" are currently disputing their seed at the Regatta.
Competitor in an Eight emails a question to HOCR staff: I would like to confirm my waiver was received?
Response from staff: Which boat are you competing in?
Competitor: I thought there was only one Eight to be in.
Staff: True, but there are various Eight events.
Competitor: I'm in the Eight that has the fancy colorful shirt to wear.
Mahé Drysdale has already been spotted at Ned Devine's in Faneuil Hall.
In honor of the Cambridge Boat Club's 100th anniversary, HOCR Executive Director Fred Schoch and his CBC buds will be racing in a wooden shell, wearing greased wool unisuits and "handlebar" mustaches. (For visual reference, please view the 1975 Wyfold's Challenge Cup photo at CBC.)
Both Great Eights have agreed to make a guest appearance at the Riverside party on Sunday evening. They have been rehearsing a choreographed dance piece all week, to pay homage to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."
Egypt has rowable rivers? Who knew! There's at least one river there fit for a Champion Men's Single to row on.
From 'Pink Knight' to 'Black Death'? This weekend could see Great Britain's multiple Olympian, Sir Matthew Pinsent, racing for Molesey Boat Club, in one of their Men's Masters crews. Could it be the Leander Club diehard (who recently said he'd never race again!) be making a comeback on the Charles, rowing for UK's infamous MBC? Hmmm...
The ultimate cosmopolitan mates-eight (aka "the Great Eight") will indeed be making an appearance on the Charles River this year. While the Olympic Champion, Olaf Tufte, will be absent--as he and his missus have sprog a baby boy yesterday--it's on good authority that his seat will be filled by the up-and-coming US sculler, Warren Anderson. After much consideration, it was deemed Anderson be "the most politically correct substitute." That, and he's a really nice bloke.
Cameron Diaz will be wearing a disguise while coxing the Gentle Giant Men's Master's Eight on Saturday afternoon. She's been working with Hollywood make-up artists to perfect a slight beard, several tattoos on her neck, and to perfectly hide her blonde hair under a wig of short dark hair.
The Regatta is distributing 'glow sticks' to all Directors' Challenge Doubles to use, while competing in the dark on Saturday evening. Race events are expected to conclude sometime before midnight.
Several individuals have been arrested for stealing Head Of The Charles' "Heroic Rowers" banners from area lampposts--and even Cambridge Boat Club (gasp!). Those arrested have been mandated to be part of the cleanup crew this Sunday evening. The CBC thieves have been relegated to Port-a-potty duty.
Overheard in the office: "It's too Romain."
The Charles River is finally going Green this year. And it's not from food-dye on Saint Patrick's Day: that Dirty Water is now being filtrated by Cambridge Water Technology.
Brown's Alumni Eight is not smarter than the average Bear.
One rower might be a last-minute scratch, as she's expecting her first grandchild this weekend. The excuse: her daughter is considering naming her firstborn Charles.
A vote for Buckley as Boathouse Dog increases lottery chances next year (but only in the Alumni Eights).
With so many movies being filmed in Greater Boston these days, it's not the least bit odd to hear a celebrity-coxed Quad will be rowing on Sunday. Since they did such a great job in 2007, brothers Ben and Casey Affleck, along with Jennifer Garner, will be back at it again for 2009; they will be joined by Katie Holmes. Rumor has it Tom Cruise is coxing, as he's the right size to be a coxswain--and because nobody tells the guy what to do.
The "hands on" Tom Cruise has also been spotted scoping out Reunion Village as a possible site location for his new movie, Wichita, currently being filmed in Greater Boston. The hay bails at RV could be the reason why.
The barges currently on the Charles River are not abandoned from Boston's legendary "4th of July" fireworks.
Hudson Boat Works' "Shark" ad has been nominated for a Clio award.
The Men's Great Eight have also been practicing Beyonce's moves from the "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" dance video, complete with black leotard unisuits that they will also be wearing while rowing in the Champion Eights on Sunday afternoon.
Director of Operations looses keys at CBC at midnight. Madness ensues momentarily, as valuable sleep is lost.
With time on their hands, a few Boston Red Sox have opted to swing oars instead of bats this weekend. Dustin Pedroia will likely be their cox.
A Nobel "Piece" Prize is being awarded to all who win their event at the Regatta this year.
The Head Of The Charles weekend is "New England's Best Kept Secret," because no one in the area knows when the heck the Regatta is scheduled each year (it's the next-to-last weekend of each October!).
